Our Approach and Program
Our student-centered approach honors the unique attributes of each learner, fostering lifelong love of music and a strong foundation for success.
We do not dictate a one-size-fits-all teaching methodology, but rather hire excellent and deeply knowledgeable teachers who cherry-pick from multiple approaches to craft a tailored, uniquely effective approach for each student.
The mission of The Bronx Conservatory is to provide specialized music instruction at a conservatory level of excellence to a community that has typically had limited access to music education.
“We are passionate about bringing musical enrichment to the Bronx, and ensuring access to every student, regardless of ability to pay.”
Doug Meyer, President
Private Lessons
BCM offers lessons in Piano, Guitar, Voice, Violin, Viola, Cello, and Double Bass.
Each student is carefully matched with and taught by a member of our exceptional faculty. The teacher quickly grows to know the student very well, and is able to provide 1-to-1 private lessons tailored to each student’s individual skill level and learning style.
Private lessons can be 30-minutes or 60-minutes.
We suggest that beginners under age eight start with 30-minute lessons, as we can always increase lesson length when student is ready.
Musicianship Skills Classes
Every registered student can attend our weekly Musicianship Skills classes free of charge.
As part of our emphasis on a broad musical education, all students registered for private lessons also receive weekly classes in Musicianship Skills. Our copyrighted three-year curriculum was developed by Bronx Conservatory and tailored and leveled to optimally support student mastery. Students learn everything from fundamentals of reading and writing music in various clefs, to more advanced music theory, ear training and rhythm skills.
Performance Opportunities
Learning “poise under pressure” is a key benefit of musical study, and performance opportunities abound at BCM.
Students at the Bronx Conservatory are able to perform in two major end of semester recitals which take place in beautiful performance halls including the Gould Memorial Auditorium of the Bronx Community College. Our students also have weekly performance opportunities, thanks to our Lunch Rush Recital Series that takes place on Saturdays 12:30-1:00. And of course, family and friends are always invited and performances are always free!
